From IRS Notices and Panic to Relief and Resolution

After Alex filed his 2024 tax return, he breathed a sigh of relief. The process was over, and he was supposed to be owed a small refund. All was well.

The refund never came, however; instead, Alex received an IRS notice CP2501, stating that the IRS disagreed with the tax return that was filed and claiming that he owed them almost $50,000.

Alex was shocked. How could he go from receiving a refund to owing this substantial amount of money? Like many taxpayers, Alex did what most people would do. He carefully reviewed his records. According to his brokerage statements, taxes had already been paid. The numbers didn’t add up, and the notice raised more questions than answers.

Fortunately, Alex remembered that he had purchased TaxAudit’s Audit Defense membership when filing his 2024 tax return. He immediately logged onto the TaxAudit website to start his case.

Securing Representation

The following business day, his case coordinator, Ashley, reached out to Alex, requesting a copy of the IRS notice as well as the information necessary to get a Power of Attorney.

Alex quickly sent over this information, and his case was then assigned to his tax professional, Jason. After reviewing the documentation, Jason called Alex and explained that the IRS was questioning securities transactions.

In order to dispute the notice, Jason requested that Alex send complete copies of all his 1099s as well as any other documentation that would support what was put on his return. Alex immediately uploaded the information, and Jason prepared a response to send to the IRS. He then forwarded it to TaxAudit’s quality control department for approval. Once the response was reviewed and approved, the administrative services team sent it off to the IRS.

Now, the waiting game would begin.

Waiting Game

About 45 days after the response was sent, Alex received another letter from the IRS. Jason reviewed the letter and informed Alex that this letter acknowledged receipt of their response and stated that they needed another 90 days to review everything that was sent. He also reassured Alex that this was standard procedure, and he would follow up as the IRS letter requested.

Over the next six months, Jason regularly followed up with the IRS every 45 days to check on the status of Alex’s case. Every single time, he was met with the same answer: the response had still not been reviewed, and they needed additional time.

Around the nine-month mark, Alex finally received a response. Unfortunately, it was not good news. This new IRS notice restated their original position, adding on additional interest and penalties, and claiming Alex now owed them over $70,000.

Understandably, Alex was distraught. The IRS notice didn’t even mention they had received or reviewed the IRS response Jason submitted, let alone acknowledge any of the documentation that was provided.

Jason called the IRS and, as it turned out, this notice was computer-generated. The IRS still had not reviewed the documentation that was sent. His first step after talking with the IRS was to call Alex and provide him with reassurance. Alex was, understandably, nervous about the number of delays and setbacks in hearing from the IRS. However, Jason reassured him that this, unfortunately, was standard for the IRS, and he was confident the case would end favorably for Alex.

Jason’s instincts were spot on. Shortly after his call with Alex, a new IRS notice arrived confirming Jason’s assessment—and revealing that Alex was actually owed a refund of over $700.

A Happy Ending

After a year of back and forth, this is what Alex had to say about the process:

Receiving a CP2000 notice from the IRS is an incredibly daunting experience. When I first opened that letter and saw an implication of owing tens of thousands of dollars, the stress was immediate and overwhelming. For months, that financial weight hung over me—until I began working with Jason at TaxAudit Defense. From our very first interaction, Jason's professional demeanor and level-headed confidence were a total game-changer. While I was struggling to remain calm, his deep knowledge and strategic insight helped me keep my cool and prevented me from spiraling into a panic. What stood out most about Jason was his meticulous approach: Detailed Process: He broke down the IRS correspondence into manageable steps. Thorough Communication: I was never left wondering about the status of my case; he kept me informed every step of the way. Educational Support: He didn't just handle the paperwork; he took the time to educate me on the "why" behind the process, which gave me immense peace of mind. Jason's patience during my moments of high anxiety was truly remarkable. He navigated the complexities of the IRS with ease and ultimately secured a successful resolution for my case. I am beyond grateful for his expertise and the outcome he achieved. If you are facing an IRS audit or correspondence issue, I cannot recommend Jason and TaxAudit Defense highly enough. Thank you, Jason, for turning a nightmare scenario into a success story!

A Positive Outcome

What began as a frightening IRS notice ended with clarity, resolution, and relief. For Alex, the outcome wasn’t just about avoiding an unexpected tax bill—it was about knowing someone had his back every step of the way.

If you’ve received an IRS notice and aren’t sure what it really means, you don’t have to face it alone. With the right expertise and advocacy, even the most intimidating situations can be resolved happily.
